Holidays in Albania: Skopje

skopje

Skopje is the capital of North Macedonia.
Easily accessible from Ohrid it is a stage that I often insert in my itineraries for two main reasons:

  • Skopje is a city rich in history and very beautiful to visit
  • Skopje is on the way to reach the South of Kosovo and to get to the beautiful Albanian Alps.

What to see in Skopje

One of the main reasons to visit the Macedonian capital is its history.
Two characters with a powerful charisma are linked to the history of this city:
Alexander the Great and Maria Theresa of Calcutta.

The whole city is a tribute to these personalities as diverse as they are powerful in the way they have left their mark on history.

Alexander the Great

Alexander the Great, also called the Macedonian, was one of the most important figures in ancient history.
His deeds still affect our lives today!
The capital of North Macedonia is a tribute to his legendary figure and all of Macedonia Square is dedicated to his ascendant and descendant lineage.

Even the facades of the buildings were literally covered with new facades to adapt them to the project of a center dedicated to the magnificent story of Alexander. In practice, everything is fake and artificial.

Mother Teresa of Calcutta

Mother Teresa of Calcutta she was born in Skopje to Albanian parents from Kosovo.
Visiting Skopje you will find a mausoleum dedicated to her in which photographic documents and fetishes are collected that tell her incredible life. The house where she was born really no longer exists and you can only visit the place where she once stood. The visit to the mausoleum is truly disturbing and strikes you deeply: her deeds, the greatness of her works cannot fail to impress. The wax statue that represents her seems to be alive and her gaze is just one of the many ways to understand her strength.

Other points of tourist and cultural interest:
  • The Vardar River runs through the city. Along its banks there are bizarre fake sailing ships used as restaurants. Despite the initial amazement, they are part of the skiline of the city and eating on board is a highly recommended experience.
  • The Old Bazaar is the true heart of Skopje, only here it is possible to understand the true spirit of the city. During the day a colorful market and at night the seat of nightlife and entertainment.
  • The Kale Fortress is an archaeological complex overlooking the city. One of the few truly ancient settlements you can visit in the city.
  • The Church of San Demetrio Megalomartire is certainly worth visiting as well as for its religious importance for the architectural one.
